Two illustrations from Karl von Eckartshausen's book: Aufschlüsse zur Magie aus geprüften Erfahrungen über verborgene philosophische Wissenschaften und seltne Geheimnisse der Natur (B545). The first images shows two men out for a walk and in front of them there is a figure mysteriously projected on a wall, the second image shows the construction of a lantern that Eckartshausen could hide under his coat and then light with his cane and startle his friend with the projected image. Quite a wonderful trick.
