This effect named after the former director of London's Royal Polytechnic, John Henry Pepper, amused and startled audiences. A ghost seemed to appear on a stage. The illusion was created using a hidden magic lantern below the stage an actor dressed as a ghost and a very large angled sheet of glass mirrored to seemingly project the reflected apparition upon the stage. The effect was first successfully demonstrated at the Royal Polytechnic in 1863,

The broadside advertises a show of Pepper's Ghost given by Mr. James Madison, who was for a time employed as a magician at the Royal Polytechnic.
